"Solstice" Series: 1989-1991
The Solstice series was conceived as statement about our universal
understanding of the creative process; including its knowns and
unknowns, its metaphors and its expectations. The painted and burned
surfaces allowed me to introduce a new vocabulary in woodturning
that would challenged our preconceptions of what a turned object
'could' be, or 'should' be. These pieces have been both loved and
despised: What more could I ask for?
"The Solstice Series represents an effort to re-connect with the
universal elements of space and time and to manifest these elements
into primary forms, in particular, the spherical form. Within this
series, the 'Spheres' have come to symbolize forms-in-motion; stationary,
but not static, and where the surface becomes a canvas for the interaction
of image, color and texture which circumvents their volume in an
endless play of self-expression.
"The 'Interspheres' and 'Monospheres' have been designed as symbols
of a whole, drawn to the point of being fully separated into halves.
These opened forms reveal raw edges and dramatic interiors, a-glow
with vibrant colors which define the inner space as volume. The
contrasts between interior and exterior surfaces are intentionally
strong. Yet their proximity is so close, and the walls so remarkably
thin, they almost seem to be united: separate, but inseparable...as
if bonded."
