"Bowls": 1976-1980
The inspirations for my early work in turned wooden forms evolved
out of my experience in working in ceramics, a childhood love for
the material of wood, and the influence of Native American ceramic
and basketry forms.
My experience in turning thin-walled wooden forms began in the
early 1970's, and was focused primarily on the development of hollow
bowls. My early influences evolved from the ceramic forms of Nampeyo,
a Sikyatki Hopi potter who worked between the late 1880's and early
1920's. The forms I developed evolved into a very personalized language
where each object became part of a growing vocabulary that represented
a transition between traditional wooden bowls and true vessel forms.
